Jumpstart is a 8-week programme aimed at improving health & wellbeing of people at risk of developing diabetes or have been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Each week participants will attend an educational session which will cover a range of topics from understanding diabetes, reading food labels and the importance of exercise in managing your diabetes.

Nutritional advice will be run by the programme leader using Diabetes New Zealand national guidelines and local health providers will come in to speak for additional support.  Once signed up to the programme, all participants will go through a one to one consultation with a YMCA trainer to get personalised exercise programme.

The education sessions will be split with fun, friendly exercise and participants will be encouraged to join group fitness classes or work on their own exercise programme outside the sessions. To maximise success, participants will be guided on how to set realistic goals and bring whanau along to the education sessions.

Success Stories

Meet Rodney! He joined Jumpstart after some family peer pressure telling him to do it! He hadn’t been in the gym for over 40 years but after getting new that his HBA1C had climbed up to 44, he was happy to go along with some motivation to improve the next set of blood test results at the Drs. In the first week, he lost his workout card but found inspiration from a gentleman on the bike next to him who was the same age but so fit! He started to increase the resistance on the bike each week and fell in love with the bike. He had an old bike in the garage, dusted it off and took it to the beach house to make sure the good work wasn’t going to be undone! ‘’Walking out the door from a workout, feels great’’
Rodney’s wife jumped on board to help him, reading about diabetes and food. ‘’I did what my wife told me to do!’’ Now I have low carb beers at the golf club, cut down on yellow food and actually started to enjoy salads! My HBA1C is now 38, I have lost 12kg, I feel healthier, sleep better and my golf has improved!
‘’It’s just like giving up cigarettes, you’ve just got to do it! You must take ownership’’

Here is Roseanna & Pat, they met through the Jumpstart programme and have found motivation by exercising together….and boy you make it sound fun with so many laughs coming from the gym! ‘’The Jumpstart group are very supportive and is a great space to share ideas, struggles and triumphs.’’ We can’t wait to help you reach more goals together!

Margarets Jumpstart Journey My experience of the Jumpstart Programme with Emily was encouraging and enjoyable.
During the 10 week programme I learnt a lot about nutrition in the way of reading the labels in supermarkets and portions of food at meal times. Along with the good and bad things to eat!
The fitness side of being pre-diabetic was very much identified to me with an exercise programme put together. I have been very impressed on the impact this has had on me.
After finishing the programme I definitely have more energy and would highly recommend this program for good health and wellbeing.

Meet Amina! After falling into a bad lifestyle and being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, she knew she had to do something and an online search lead her to Jumpstart!

What have you learnt from Jumpstart?

I learnt so much from the programme and the people! It’s so hard to understand the information about diabetes when you search online. I now understand portion sizes and how important and effective exercise is in controlling your blood sugar levels.

How has Jumpstart made a difference?

Before Jumpstart, I was so lethargic and now I feel fresh and way more active! I didn’t realise how much weight gain had affected me. I lost 2.5kg whilst on Jumpstart and 5cm off my hips! Debbie and Helen’s encouragement kept me going (joining into classes) and they helped me believe in myself and to never say NO!
