School holiday camps

The camp experience is a hard one to put into words. It’s about the bonding between people. It’s about spending the week in a different environment. It’s about final night campfire. It’s about experiencing an entirely new culture and world that you helped create. It is like no other experience in the world, and here at the Kaitoke Outdoor Education Centre we strive to help every camper leave having that experience.

Kaitoke Outdoor Education Centre offers a tiered pricing system for our holiday camp programmes. This allows your family to choose the price that works best for you. Traditionally, we have only offered a heavily subsidised rate to ensure access to all. This rate does not cover ongoing development of camp, upkeep, or cover the full cost of running the camp programmes. We are continuing to offer this heavily subsidised rate and now include other options for your consideration.

Bookings are essential as we need to know who is attending on a daily basis. Payments can be made via internet banking. Please contact the YMCA providing the service for registration. All of our programmes are CYF approved to operating OSCAR standards. For you, this means your child participates in a nationally approved programme, and, should your family qualify, enables you to receive a Work and Income subsidy.

Summer holidays are even more fun at Kaitoke Outdoor Education Centre

We have four exciting programmes on offer for kids and youth these holidays. Read below to find out more about each programme and book online today.

Pioneers Day Camp for 5-7 year olds

At YMCA Kaitoke Outdoor Education Centre we understand that it’s tough for our youngest campers to be away from home (and for their parents) so that’s why we offer a programme that gives our youngest campers the ‘camp experience’ without the hassle of staying over. We will even pick up and drop off our young pioneers from two easy locations in Lower Hutt and Wellington City each day. A great introductory outdoor education experience for 5-7 year olds!

Explorers Day Camp & Residential Camp for 8-9 year olds

The Explorers Day Programme offers our younger campers a chance to experience the excitement of outdoor education in a safe and caring environment. Outdoor activities could include Kayaking, shelter building, orienteering, or a picnic trip to Kaitoke Regional Park. The Explorers day programme offers parents the option of having the kids stay in their own bed each night or to stay over on the Explorers Residential Camp. The daily programme will stay this same for those campers on the day programme or staying overnight. Daily transport each way is included in the cost to and from two convenient locations in Lower Hutt and Wellington City.

Discoverers Residential Camp for 10-12 year olds

The Discoverers programme offers kids a chance to meet and hang out with campers of a similar age. The focus of the week is on outdoor activities which could include abseiling, kayaking, super fox & giant swing. Learning how to do these cool activities is a fantastic way to be active and develop skills to prepare kids for New Zealand’s great outdoors.

Adventurers Residential Camp for 13-15 year olds

The Adventurers programme is all about discovering yourself through positive group and outdoor experience. Enjoy a week of activities which could include mountain biking, high ropes, surf kayaking, air rifles or bush walking. Campers are encouraged to take leadership roles within the group and take ownership of their camp programme.

Everything is Included

Transport

Free optional transport to and from camp from various locations around Wellington.

Fully Trained Staff

All staff are Police checked and fully trained in first aid, behaviour management and programme delivery

Accommodation

Cabin style accommodation in bunks. Campers can request to be in the same cabin as friends. Cabins are separated by gender.

Activities

All activities and special equipment included

Meals

Nutritious meals are included during the stay and dietary requirements are catered for.

Leader in Training Programme

Our leaders in training program is designed to give you confidence and gain skills. Complete modules during each camp you attend. Make new friends and be part of our camp culture. If you are aged 16 years+ then this is the perfect opportunity for you to shadow a leader during your stay at camp and learn from the best.
