About Family Camp
Almost ¾ of young people (aged between 11 and 24yrs) say that family is what they value most in life, but unfortunately the amount of quality time families are spending together is becoming less and less.
- 30% of parents say they don’t spend any active time with their kids
- Only one in 10 families eat a meal together each week
- Participation (in anything) has been proven to be the key factor in supporting vulnerable children.
Family Camp is about removing all the pressures of daily life for a weekend and enabling families to switch off and spend a few days actively reconnecting together in an outdoors environment with the support of caring YMCA staff. Family Camp is a fully funded programme supported and delivered by YMCA Wellington. Selected families from all walks of life and backgrounds are treated to a weekend of cabin based camping at Kaitoke Outdoor Education Centre, located at the base of the Tararua Ranges, North of Wellington.
This opportunity presents itself as a simple pass for families who find it harder to find the time and resources required to indulge in a classic kiwi camping experience. Family Camp removes families from the pressures of daily life, giving them time together to connect and become stronger as a family unit, while having some good old-fashioned fun in the great outdoors along the way. What does this fun involve? Since Family Camp is designed to cater to people from all walks of life, activities are determined completely by the abilities of our campers. Families could find themselves drenched on the mudslide, racing down a super flying fox, marvelling over the nightline, testing their limits on the climbing wall, toasting marshmallows on a crackling fire while listening out for moreporks and much more.
